an innocent man,
bore the burden
of sin
for all mankind
and then was
brutally executed.
the spotless lamb
led to slaughter.
He was:
beaten.
spat on.
mocked.
yet, He forgave.
oh yes, He forgave!
flogged and whipped,
back torn to shreds—
muscles and tendons exposed.
clothes ripped and frayed.
rivers of blood
streamed down his sides.
a crown of thorns was
pressed into his flesh
and
nails were driven
through his hands and feet.
then he was hoisted up
and hung on a cross
as a symbol
and a warning.
he breathed his last breath,
declared it is finished.
his lungs collapsed,
and he died,
asphyxiated.
stabbed once more
for assurance,
for proof.
the skies darkened.
the veil tore.
the savior of mankind
lived no longer.
His light was extinguished,
but not for long.
